1. History and origin of Howlite
Howlite is a semi-precious stone discovered in 1868 by Canadian chemist Henry How. It was found in a gypsum quarry in Nova Scotia, Canada. Although miners had spotted the stone earlier, it was mineralogist James Dwight Dana who named it in honor of Henry How. The stone was often confused with other minerals, such as magnesite and turquoise, because of its similar appearance.
Howlite has a relatively recent history and does not have ancient legends like other gemstones. However, it was used by Native Americans, especially for shamanic rituals, and was considered a sacred stone. They nicknamed it the "white buffalo stone" because of its rarity. Today, it is mainly used for making jewelry and decorative objects.
2. Properties and virtues of Howlite in lithotherapy
On a mental level, howlite is known for its calming properties. It helps to clear the mind, reduce stress, anxiety and negative thoughts. It also promotes restful sleep. It is ideal for managing emotions, especially in times of upheaval or change. It dispels fears, helps to make important decisions with calm and wisdom.
It promotes concentration and improves memory, making it an ideal stone for students or those working in environments requiring quiet and reflection. It is also used to increase intuition, clarity and clairvoyance, especially when combined with the third eye chakra.
On a physical level, howlite is beneficial for blood circulation and helps strengthen bones, nails and hair. It also supports the regeneration of red and white blood cells, promoting better skin health and greater elasticity of the epidermis. It has beneficial effects on digestion, especially the stomach and liver, and is a good ally for people wishing to detach themselves from toxins or follow a weight loss diet.
On a spiritual level, howlite is associated with the third eye chakra. It helps to develop introspection and promotes spiritual awakening. It allows one to detach oneself from material concerns and achieve a clearer vision of the spiritual and personal world. It promotes the balance and opening of this chakra, essential for accessing extrasensory abilities.
3. Maintenance and recharging of Howlite
Howlite must be purified regularly to eliminate the negative energies it absorbs. This can be done by immersing it in distilled or spring water (avoid tap water) for a few hours. The use of incense is also an effective method of purification. Once purified, it is recommended to dry the stone with a soft cloth to preserve its natural beauty.
To recharge its energies, expose the howlite to the sun for a few hours. This helps restore its energy and maintain its benefits. For a more powerful recharge, place it on a quartz cluster or an amethyst geode. It is advisable to purify and recharge the stone 1 to 2 times a month, or more frequently if it is used regularly.
In lithotherapy, howlite combines well with stones such as amethyst, citrine, hematite and red jasper to reinforce its virtues.
