1. History and Origin of Carnelian
Carnelian is a semi-precious stone, appreciated since ancient times. In ancient Egypt, it was used for funeral rites and as a protective talisman. The Egyptians offered it to the goddess Isis, believing that she accompanied the deceased on their journey to the afterlife. This stone was also used in many royal jewelry and ornaments, such as amulets and sarcophagi.
The name “carnelian” comes from the dogwood tree, whose fruits have a red-orange color similar to that of the stone. Carnelian, sometimes called “sardonyx,” was adopted as early as the 15th century. Today, it comes from deposits mainly in India, Madagascar, Brazil, and Uruguay. Geologically, carnelian is a variety of chalcedony colored by iron oxides and forms in volcanic rocks at low temperatures.
2. Properties and Virtues in Lithotherapy
In lithotherapy, carnelian is a very energetic stone, symbolizing joy, vitality and self-confidence. It is associated with the sacred and solar plexus chakras, which allows it to improve creativity, anchoring in the present moment, and increase motivation. This stone is also known for its emotional benefits: it helps calm angry people, dispelling anger and negativity.
Carnelian is also a stone of courage, ambition and action. It helps to improve concentration and decision-making by dispelling distracting thoughts. It also promotes self-expression and improves eloquence.
Physically, it stimulates fertility, helps regulate metabolism, and relieves back pain, rheumatism, and problems related to blood circulation. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
3. Carnelian Maintenance and Recharge
Carnelian, like all stones in lithotherapy, requires regular maintenance to maintain its positive energy. To purify the stone, it is advisable to rinse it with spring water and let it recharge under sunlight or on a flower of life. It can also be purified by using palo santo smoke or incense.
It is important to protect it from negative energies, because over time it can lose its effectiveness. By cleaning and recharging it regularly, carnelian regains its revitalizing power and continues to provide its well-being virtues.
